What is there to do at La Isla de La Piedra?

The beach on La Isla de La Piedra has many activities to offer. You can go tubing, rent a boogie board, rent an ATV, go horseback riding, take pictures with Iguanas, purchase souvenirs and jewelry. There are tens of restaurants on the beach to choose from.

We recommend just stepping out of the house to the beach, walking to your right, and starting with the first restaurant. They are new, the service is good, and the food is fresh. You can stay there all day. You can work your way down the long line of restaurants for the other days :) When you pick a place just be sure to check that they have enough staff working the tables. Most of these places are family owned and can be short staffed sometimes which can affect the service. Most restaurants on the beach also offer breakfast options like eggs and pancakes.

One of the days of your trip you should walk or take an 'Auriga' (truck taxi) to 'La Isla de Los Chivos' it's just on the other side of the beach. There is a restaurant there called 'La Caleta.' It's very popular, nice, and modern. Also the beach at the La Isla de Los Chivos is very calm and the water is more clear. You can rent large floaties (link a huge flamenco) and chill on the water. You can buy snorkeling goggles and look at fishes by the rocks.

If you decide you want to do a couple of short trips into town here are a couple of recommendations:

  1. Hike to 'El Faro' - it is about a 30 minute hike up to the top of the mountain where the light house is. Up there they have a crystal bridge that you can go on to take amazing pictures. Be sure to pay for the bridge entrance at the beginning of your hike.

  2. Visit the 'Observatorio' - it's a magical place with so much history. You can choose to do a guided tour or just explore yourself. You'll watch a 10 minute movie about the history of Mazatlan and then go up in the little trolly to the observatory building which is a museum. Around it there is a Cactus garden, iguanas, aviary, and an exhibit on how they make Mezcal. You can go up to the Sky Bar and enjoy delicious fresh drinks and appetizers and enjoy the amazing view.

  3. Visit the 'Mercado' (market) and the 'Catedral' in Centro.

  4. If visiting on the weekend be sure to also visit 'Plazuela Machado'.

  5. Our favorite place to eat at in Centro is 'Totem'.

  6. Be sure to also visit Olas Altas.

If you do plan to cross to Mazatlan be sure to remember there are 2 boat crossings. One that goes 24/7 and another that closes around 6pm or 7pm depending on the season. When crossing over to Mazatlan you'll be able to easily get a cab/pulmonia or Uber/DiDi. If you cross back to the Island after dark there won't be cabs waiting for you so you'll need to walk. It'll take about 15 minutes. It is a safe walk.

Also, if you do cross at the 24/7 ferry crossing just know that it makes one extra stop stop on the Island before your stop.
